A Message from the new Principal/Interim Head of School, Ms. Harrison

Greetings Parents and Visitors,

What a pleasure it is to be at Friendship Day School for The Sciences and The Arts! I have loved this school from the moment I attended an open house months before starting to volunteer here. Prior to this school year, I was involved with FDS for the two previous years. I started out as a volunteer, progressed to substituting for then head of school, Mrs. Comer, when she was absent. I then was asked to work one or two days a week and soon after made my own decision to work every day. Last year, I was asked to become associate head of school. And now, following Mrs. Comer’s retirement, I was appointed as interim head of school.

I have a 30+ year educational background, serving as elementary school teacher, curriculum specialist, staff development specialist and interim director, multicultural education coordinator, program specialist, new teacher mentor, visiting and adjunct college instructor, elementary principal, Title 1 reading and math specialist, tutor (private and commercial), Camp Invention director, Sunday school teacher and children’s Christian education leader, and an entrepreneur of two businesses. Of all these amazing opportunities, I count serving at FDS as one of my favorite experiences.

FDS has grown each year of its establishment from one class of thirteen kindergarteners in 2017 to seventy-five scholars in kindergarten through fourth grade this 2021–2022 school year. Almost the entire cohort of our first kindergartners are FDS fourth-grade scholars today. I thank our cohort families for sticking with us, and I’m grateful to all our other current families for choosing us. I appreciate your continued support and involvement with our wonderful school.

Yes, FDS is truly a special place to be… there’s nowhere else like it. I’ve heard parents remark, “Friendship Day School is a best-kept secret." Yet, I don’t want to keep it a secret… I want the world to know that FDS soars!

Warm regards,

Renee Harrison
